UNION — A local Relay for Life team looks to raise money for next year’s relay with a Halloween costume party this weekend.
The Union County Relay for Life team known as Team Leroy will host a Halloween costume party benefit — featuring a performance from the band Quest — from 8 p.m.-midnight this Saturday, Oct. 26, at Shady’s.
Cash prizes will be awarded for first- and second-place costumes, and Team Leroy will sell tickets for items — including gift certificates, home decor and more — to be raffled throughout the night. Admission is $10 per person or $15 per couple, and all proceeds will benefit Team Leroy’s fund raising efforts toward a cure for cancer.
The members of Team Leroy walked in the 2013 Union County Relay for Life in memory of Leroy “Little Man” Belue, who passed away from cancer in January. The team raised the most funds of all the Union County relay teams with a grand total of $16,350.47. The team also won “Best Campsite,” “Top New Team,” and a “Spirit of the Relay” awards the night of the relay. Funds raised during this weekend’s event will go toward the team’s 2014 Union County Relay for Life efforts.
Team Leroy member Gwen Ivey said she is asking for special prayer for Leroy’s widow, Beth Belue, as she is in rehab in Spartanburg after suffering from a stroke last Thursday.
“We are going through with this benefit for her,” Ivey said. “She would want us to.”
