Winnsboro Cotillion presents three debutantes

WINNSBORO — The Winnsboro Cotillion presented three debutantes at the 59th annual Winter Ball held Dec. 14 at The Old Armory. Guests were received by Christopher Wilson Bass, president of the Winnsboro Cotillion, along with Mrs. Bass, the debutantes and their parents.


The debutantes were presented by their fathers, and then performed the traditional debutante figure with their escorts and marshals. Each debutante carried the Winnsboro Cotillion signature bouquet of pale pink roses, pink lisianthus, miniature orchids, freesia and greenery clustered in an embossed silver holder. Following the debutante figure and the grand march, members and guests of the cotillion enjoyed an evening of dining and dancing.


Debutantes making their formal bows to society were:


Miss Katherine Ivey Matthews


Miss Katherine Ivey Matthews is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ivey Matthews. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Thomas Patrick Matthews and the late Mr. Matthews and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wilson Harper. She attends Clemson University where she is majoring in animal and veterinary science. Her escort was Thomas McLeod Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen McLeod Jones. Thomas McLeod Jones is a graduate of Clemson University. Her marshal was George Lewis Matthews, who is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Matthews is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Patrick Matthews Jr.


Miss Mary Lillian Louise Salerno


Miss Mary Lillian Louise Salerno is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Umberto Salerno. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. James Rhett Miller and the late Mr. Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Anthony Salerno. She is majoring in early childhood education at the University of Mississippi. Her escort was Marc Albert Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew John Lee, and her marshal was Kyle Gray Tomlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Tomlin. Lee and Tomlin attend Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.


Miss Jordan Kylie Weir


Miss Jordan Kylie Weir is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Bradley Weir. She is the granddaughter of Thomas Harvey Weir and the late Mrs. Weir and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lee Gorby of North Benton, Ohio. She is majoring in mechanical engineering at Clemson University. Her escort and marshal were her brothers. Joseph Herbert Weir was her escort and Jeffery Thomas Weir was her marshal. Both are graduates of Clemson University.

James Kyle Black


James Kyle Black is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Ernest Black Jr. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. William Ernest Black Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Wilson Swanson, and the late James Marion Atkerson. James Kyle Black is studying forestry and wildlife management at Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Georgetown.


Chandler McNair Coleman


Chandler McNair Coleman is the son of Sen. and Mrs. Creighton Buchanan Coleman. He is the grandson of charter members Mrs. George Franklin Coleman and the late Honorable George Franklin Coleman, and also the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Chandler McNair. Chandler McNair Coleman attends The Citadel in Charleston, where he is studying pre-law.


Robert Boyd Ellison Jr.


Robert Boyd Ellison Jr. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Boyd Ellison Sr. He is the grandson of Winnsboro Cotillion Charter members Mr. and Mrs. David Gaillard Ellison and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Johnston Patrick. Robert Boyd Ellison Jr. attends Horry-Georgetown Technical College where he is majoring in forestry.


Michael Ralph Mills Jr.


Michael Ralph Mills Jr. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Ralph Mills Sr. He is the grandson of Mrs. James Arledge Nichols Sr. and the late Mr. Nichols and the late Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Erskine Mills Jr. Michael Ralph Mills Jr. is attending Clemson University where he is majoring in business.


Lee Walker Renwick


Lee Walker Renwick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Calvin Renwick Jr. He is the grandson of Mrs. Douglas Lee Walker and the late Mr. Walker and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Calvin Renwick Sr. Lee Walker Renwick is attending York Technical College majoring in building construction management.


The officers of the Winnsboro Cotillion are Christopher Wilson Bass, president; Mrs. William Robinson, vice president; Mrs. Guerry Ladd Hensely, secretary; Mrs. Heyward Hood Harden, treasurer; and John Palmer Nicholson, past president.


Members of the board of directors are William Herbert Bundy, Mrs. George Ivey Matthews, Mrs. Carl Springer, Robert Derrell Drake, Donnie Richard Laird, Mrs. James Harvey Baughman, Mrs. Justin Winget Blackwelder and Daniel Mayes Bonds.
