WINNSBORO — David Ferguson, chairman of the Fairfield County Council, told the news media following Monday’s council meeting that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was investigating Fairfield County.

Ferguson said SLED agents are looking into the procurement practices of the county regarding rewarding contracts to the Dennis Corporation and S2 Engineering.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry confirmed Thursday that agents are conducting an investigation concerning allegations against county government.

Berry said he could not comment on any specific details of the investigation while it is ongoing.

Although he wasn’t sure when the investigation began, Berry said he would inform The Herald Independent when he confirmed the date.

“I will certainly get that information to you as quickly as I can,” he said.

Berry said what or who prompted the investigation is a specific detail that would not be made available until after the investigation is complete.
