Lady Eagles haul in post-season awards

WINNSBORO — Four of Richard Winn Academy’s varsity girls’ basketball players and their coach have been tapped for numerous post season honors following their 28-1 season.


The Lady Eagles soared to their second consecutive AA state title on March 1 at the Sumter Civic Center.


Freshman Alyssa Atkerson, a point guard, not only was named to the All Region team, but also was selected to participate in the SCISA North-South All Star game that was held March 8 in Sumter at Wilson Hall School.


Sophomore post player Jaycie Johnson was selected by the region coaches as the Region Player of the Year. She was also named to the SCISA North-South All Star team, High School Sports Report All State Team, AA State All Tournament team, and as SCISA AA Co-Player of the Year.


Teammate Jessie Stidham, a junior forward, was selected as an All Region player and joined Atkerson and Johnson as a participant in the North-South All Star game. Stidham was also named to the High School Sports Report All State Team.


Senior guard Carson Justice, scoring well over 1,500 points in her career, also garnered many post season honors including being named to the All Region Team, AA State All Tournament Team, High School Sports Report All State Team, and as SCISA AA Co-Player of the Year. Additionally, Justice represented Richard Winn in the SCISA-GISA All Star game held in Macon, Ga. on March 15.


Once again Coach Jason Haltiwanger was named Region Coach of the Year. He was also selected as AA SCISA Coach of the Year by the High School Sports Report. This was his Lady Eagles third consecutive appearance in the state title game, capturing back-to-back championship titles in 2013 and 2014.
