LEXINGTON — Richard Winn Academy’s softball season came to a close Saturday after a taking a loss in the double-elimination SCISA AA state tournament.

The Lady Eagles finished in fifth place after going 3-2 during this weekend’s bracket at the Oak Grove/Pine Grove softball complex in Lexington.

The Lady Eagles played an exhausting tournament schedule of five full games in less than a 24-hour period.

After moving into the loser’s bracket for Saturday morning’s round three, the Lady Eagles defeated Pee Dee 4-2 and then dropped Trinity-Byrnes (for the second time) 9-7 in round four before being knocked out of the tournament with their second loss 3-14 to Carolina Academy in round five.

“I am so proud of all my players for their play this season,” head coach Retta Taylor said.

Taylor was especially proud of her catcher Anna Grey Walters who played the majority of the tournament with an injury.

“I am super proud of senior Anna Grey Walters for playing through the tournament with an injured hand,” she noted. “Even though her hand was bruised and swollen from an early playoff incident involving a play at home plate, she (Walters) endured the pain and played her heart out.”

Friday’s round one

Richard Winn began its playoff run with an 18-8 win over Trinity Byrnes in six innings. The Lady Eagles scored their monstrous 18 runs off 12 hits, five walks, three errors, two hit batters and nine wild pitches.

The big inning for the Lady Eagles came in the fifth, when they scored seven runs and sent 11 batters to the plate.

Richard Winn was able to score at least one run in each inning except for the fourth, when they were retired in order.

Bailey Taylor earned the win on the hill after going the distance and allowing eight runs on 10 hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Taylor tossed a total of 96 pitches with 67 going for strikes.

Neither team was able to record an extra base hit.
