WINNSBORO — The staff of The Eagle Eye News, Richard Winn Academy’s student newspaper, recently solicited funds for the victims of the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.

The 10-person newspaper staff announced the event and put up fliers around the school. Their Hope for the Philippines project bake sale took place during school break time on Nov. 20. In addition to the bake sale, the staff placed jars in each classroom to collect loose change. In just seven days time, the staff collected just over $440.

Junior Hannah Silvia, editor of the paper, organized the project with the help of the others on the staff.

“I was astounded at the amount of help the newspaper staff received during this fundraiser,” she said. “Our expectations more than doubled. We couldn’t be more thankful for the results.”

All the proceeds went to help the Philippine victims via Samaritan’s Purse, an international disaster relief organization.
