Former Troup County sheriff's investigator Wesley Gaddy did not know the people at a residence where he was shot and killed, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation special agent said Thursday.
Wayne Smith, GBI special agent in charge of investigating the shooting, said Gaddy did not know Asa Hall, 69, and Tara Hall, 42, when he came to their residence on Bill Taylor Road. He also said that during the fight, the two were struggling over the control of Asa Hall's .357 revolver.
“We know what happened, we just don't know why,” Smith said. “The autopsy and blood work will reveal more. Speaking with the family, he may not have been in the right state of mind.”
Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff hosted a press conference Thursday afternoon regarding the Wednesday night shooting and death of the former deputy. He said at about 11 p.m., Troup County 911 received a call from the 300 block of Bill Taylor Road in Pine Mountain regarding a complaint of a suspicious person.
“The lady on the phone, the man's wife, told us there was a suspicious person at the door,” Woodruff said. “Her husband was talking to him and he was identifying himself as a former deputy sheriff at the sheriff's office.”
Woodruff said that the man at the door was identified as Gaddy, 42, of Pine Mountain.
“At some point, he turned as if to leave and then turned back around and forced his way into the residence. A struggle ensued between him and the homeowner,” Woodruff said.
At some point during the fight, Tara Hall grabbed a gun, possibly a .380 caliber pistol. Woodruff said she fired three shots at Gaddy, which struck him once in the head and twice in the abdomen, killing him.
Gaddy was a former drug investigator who resigned in July 2013. He was with the sheriff's office for 16 years.
Woodruff said he called the GBI in to investigate the shooting, since Gaddy was a former deputy. He said Thursday that the sheriff's office had no further information on the incident.
No charges were pending in the case.
