Troup County schools and LaGrange College were open today, however, several parents criticized the Troup County School System on its notification policy.

Many parents were upset that the Troup County School System did not issue a notification until last night and early this morning that schools were likely to remain open despite the inclement weather forecasted. Several parents made inquiries on the TCSS Facebook page asking if the schools would be opened. Their questions went unanswered until about 7 p.m. Sunday night, with an update at 9:15 p.m. from TCSS saying that the schools would likely be operating on a normal schedule.

So many comments were being generated on the TCSS Facebook page that it was ultimately taken down Sunday night at around 10 p.m. and was not reactivated until 5:30 a.m. today. There were complaints posted on other social media that their comments were being deleted and some reported they were banned from the TCSS Facebook page. TCSS did post on its website and Facebook page Monday morning that schools would be operating on normal schedules.

TCSS responded to Daily News inquiries with the following email:

“The Troup County School System utilizes several avenues to provide information to the community, including social media. The purpose of the district’s social media page is to inform students, parents, and community members of district news. As news becomes available, it is posted to the site for informational purposes; at times, such as updating, the site may not be available for review.

“The district reserves all rights to its page. To maintain the integrity of the district’s news and limit the occurrence of misinformation, no comments will remain on the district’s page.

“The district’s emergency weather procedures are available on the website; the website is the district’s primary source for school news. If parents require more information, they are encouraged to contact the child’s school or the district office, 706 812-7900.”
