WINNSBORO — The Benefit Bank of South Carolina will be offering a free income tax preparation event in the Fairfield Memorial Hospital conference room from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 12.

Individuals who are single or filing separately earning up to $65,000 and a married couple earning up to $95,000 yearly can have their taxes filed at no cost.

No prior appointment is required, but registration is encouraged to ensure there is adequate staff on hand to provide service to attendees.

Individuals are asked to bring all required documents, such as W-2 forms and any other documents needed to file taxes.

Attendees can also get signed up for the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) or Medicaid during the event.

Contact Denise Blackwell or Harvey Beach at 803-635-0209 or 803-718-4930 for more information.

Benefit Bank is a non-profit organization that provides free services to individuals throughout the state. At Fairfield Memorial Hospital, individuals can be processed through the Benefit Bank to identify resources they might be eligible for.

Resources include tax assistance through free filing, food stamps, job assistance and job training.

Individuals can visit with Benefit Bank representatives either by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

The community can call 803-399-9599 or 1-800-726-8774 to receive direction on where and how to receive assistance.

“What’s happening is that we are able to funnel people through the hospital to the Benefit Bank and we can do a quick analysis to see if they are eligible for medicaid, food stamps or the healthcare market place,” FMH clinical outreach coordinator Harvey Beach said.

During 2013, there was $800 million in unclaimed benefits statewide.

According to Beach, there have not been any cutbacks and the same amount of funds are still available in 2014.

“We want to capture those numbers because it allows us to identify and engage the client more,” he noted.
