Two were arrested on methamphetamine and child deprivation charges after LaGrange police investigators served a search warrant on a residence.


Agents with the LaGrange Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit executed a search warrant in the 200 block of Tuggle Street at 7:30 p.m. Friday, based on information that the residents were allegedly associated with drug dealings.


Officers made contact with Jacoba Barber, 31, of LaGrange who allegedly resisted officers and attempted to tamper with evidence by allegedly trying to break her cellphone to keep police from finding text and phone messages.


According to the report, during the search of the residence, police found $500-600 worth of methamphetamine consistent with distribution. They also found several items consistent with the sale of drugs.


Barber and Jason Payne, 35, of LaGrange, who was also at the residence, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a drug free zone as the residence is located in the Benjamin Harvey Hill Apartments.


Police reported two children under 13 were living in the home in alleged deplorable conditions. According to police, in addition to being unsanitary, the home had no electricity, no running water, no food and no beds.


Due to the condition of the home and the drugs found with two children being present, Barber and Payne are facing two counts of deprivation of a minor charges.


Barber will face an additional charge of obstruction of a police officer and tampering with evidence.
