Eagles come up short in opener

ESTILL — A come back bid fell short Friday night as the Eagles of Richard Winn lost 30-26 to the Patrick Henry Patriots. The Eagles trailed 22-6 at halftime. They overcame a rash of first half penalties to play more fundamentally sound football in the second half. John Coleman scored in the third quarter to cut into the lead. Quarterback Matt Taylor rushed for a score early in the fourth quarter and then Coleman scored with about a minute remaining to give the Eagles a 26-22 lead.
The Patriots had time for one final drive. They scored with 22 seconds left and converted a two-point try to take a 30-26 victory. Coleman scored three touchdowns for the Eagles in the season opener. For a more detailed write-up of the game, see Tuesday’s edition of The Herald Independent.
