WINNSBORO — The Lady Eagles of Richard Winn Academy set, spiked and blocked their way to a 3-0 record in August.

On Aug. 26, the Eagles clawed the Heathwood Hall Highlanders, winning 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19). Standout players included Marion Walker Coleman with two kills; Jaycie Johnson with two kills and one block; Carson Justice with two kills, one ace and one block; Alyssa Atkerson with one kill and two aces; and Emily Brigman with two kills and one block.

The win gave Coach Callie Sims a true measure of the team’s potential since they were facing a veteran squad from Heathwood Hall.

The RWA Eagles lost one set of an match in a battle of the Eagles with S.C. 34 rival Newberry Academy. But Richard Winn was clutch when it counted and sent those other Eagles home to Newberry with a loss.

RWA won the home match 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22). Top players were Emily Brigman with six kills; Carson Justice with six kills and three aces; Alyssa Atkerson with five kills; Jaycie Johnson with four kills and two blocks; Rebecca Robertson with two aces; and Madison Wade with one ace. Game captain Marion Walker Coleman and Megan Simpson led the stats in digs.

Young Eagles waiting in the wings for the varsity squad have taken notice of the level of play and matched RWA varsity by starting the season with a win. They defeated Heathwood Hall 2-1 (14-25, 25-20, 25-16) in their first action of the season.

Both JV and Varsity teams play at home against Laurens Academy on Sept. 3. JV starts at 5 p.m. and varsity follows around 6:15 p.m.
