WINNSBORO — The Richard Winn Eagles overcame a three point halftime deficit Friday night and avenged a loss last year to Greenwood Christian Academy. RWA won its home opener in dramatic fashion with Matt Taylor scoring the winning touchdown on a long run late in the game, as the Eagles pulled out a 36-34 come from behind win.

RWA got off to a slow start against GCA but came alive in the second half to secure the Eagles’ second win of 2013.

Greenwood Christian struck first with their quarterback scoring a rushing touchdown with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles short yardage defense was stout and the GCA two-point conversion was no good. GCA went up 12-0 on a three yard touchdown run and once again the Eagles stopped the two-point conversion. With 3:45 left in the first quarter RWA trailed by 12 but then the Eagles went on a long drive capped off by a power touchdown run by junior quarterback Matt Taylor. Mitchell Gibbons’ extra point was good and RWA trailed 12-7.

GCA answered with a touchdown on the next possession and once more the two-point conversion was no good.

Webb Yongue hauled in a long touchdown pass from Taylor. Austin Knox powered over the goal line for the two-point conversion and RWA trailed 18-15. GCA drove inside the ten yard line but RWA forced and recovered a fumble to stop that drive as the half wound down.
