LAKE CITY — The Carolina Bobcats mauled the Richard Winn Academy Eagles 44-20 in conference action Friday night.

For the first two quarters, RWA answered each Carolina score. Matt Taylor hooked up with John Coleman on a 20-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 6-6 in the first but the PAT was no good for RWA. Coleman made it a 14-13 game with a four-yard second quarter touchdown run and Mitchell Gibbons hit the PAT.

Carolina scored from a yard out to extend its lead. At the half the Eagles trailed 22-13.

The Eagles scored first in the second half to trim the lead to 22-20. After that play a Bobcat player was knocked unconscious and lay on the turf 15 to 20 minutes while medical staff attended to him.

Coach Dan Dickerson said the extended break in the action gave Carolina time to regroup and the Bobcats came on like gangbusters afterwards. He thought his guys had a hard time remaining focused during the stoppage of play and said once they got into a hole that time became the Eagles’ enemy.

“We needed to try and make some big plays in the passing game,” he said. “But we lacked time.”

Defensive breakdowns in the second half helped the Bobcats put up 20 unanswered points using a bevy of big plays including a 50-yard touchdown run, a 41-yard touchdown pass and a 21-yard touchdown pass. Special teams also was an issue with RWA giving up a first half kick off return for a touchdown.

Dickerson said it was a good team effort but the Eagles just made mistakes that they could not afford to make if they were to beat a team of Carolina’s caliber.

“Our goal still is to win out and to have the best season around here that Richard Winn has had in some time,” he said.

He said Andrew Jackson is a big team but the Eagles should have a speed advantage Friday night.

“We are trying to change the culture around here, and playoffs or not, that is our main goal,” Dickerson said.
