WINNSBORO — Just two vendors turned out for an Oct. 22 vendor forum hosted by Fairfield County.

The low turnout came despite the event being announced in local media, at council meetings, on the county website, in ads and via a survey, leaving county officials wondering what it takes to get businesspeople interested in participating in that kind of networking opportunity.

Shelia Pickett, procurement director for Fairfield County, said the county held this forum in the evening so working people could attend once they got off work.

“I was personally surprised by the low turnout,” she said.

Earlier in the year an afternoon vendors’ forum with CB&I and other companies was well-attended, according to Pickett, a discrepancy that she said left county officials perplexed. Pickett said county staff has not yet determined if more vendor forums need to be held in the future.

She said vendors can contact her office at 712-6503 or email her at spickett@fairfieldsc.com and make an appointment to receive tips on paperwork, licensing and other procedures that can increase their opportunities to bid for, and hopefully obtain, work.

Pickett also mentioned the role the county plays with Designated Business Enterprises to help encourage greater participation from minority owned businesses in the procurement process.

Pickett requested the vendors who did attend, On Guard Securities and C&G Supply cleaning and janitorial services, contact other vendors to spread the word about resources the county has for economic development.
