Believe it or not August is already here. Along with August, comes a host of seasonal expectations; last minute vacations, relocations, school preparation and the unsure feeling created by a change in school environments. Rather than focus on the summer days that have already passed and the dreaded 1st day of school, I suggest you make the most of the remaining days of summer 2013.

After all, a lot will happen in these days just before school starts. The nearness of school brings back all of those memories from last school year. Preparing for the 1st day of school most assuredly means, among other things, school shopping. Shopping for school supplies and clothes will certainly lead to at least one parental lecture on dress code and the way we dressed “back in the day”. If you have already heard that lecture this summer, go ahead, cross it off of your summer “to do” list and try not to force a 2nd, 3rd or 4th verbal eruption from Mount Momma. Try not to get so caught up in who is wearing what and how many different color kicks that others have. Remember what the Serenity Prayer says about Courage, Peace and Wisdom. After all, do you really want to show up on the 1st day of school looking like the mannequin at your favorite mall store?

I must acknowledge that the 1st day of school is not dreaded by all students. There are some students ready and eagerly waiting to begin the new school year. Though all have different reasons for their readiness, ready they sit. Some are ready because they are simply bored out of their minds. Some are tired of the constant state of “chores” that have plagued them since early June. Others miss their friends. Still others need the discipline and structure that the school routine adds to young lives. K4 & K5 look forward to the new beginning and Seniors just want to “git r done”.

Whatever your reason or rationale, however you feel about school, GUESS WHAT?!? It’s coming! The remaining days of summer are yours to spend how you choose. What will you do with them? Will you waste them or invest them? How’s that summer reading coming along? Have you set any goals for the 2013 – 2014 school year? Will this be your year to excel? Or, will it be just another year for you to wish away? Whether you prepare for it, or just let it creep up on you, the school year will come and it will go. Your preparation dictates your success.

The upcoming school year holds something very special for every student. For you high school seniors; “On your mark. Get set. Go!” With graduation, job prospects and maybe even college on the horizon, this year will be a mad dash. But, do you even know where you are racing off to? For you little darlings starting K-4 & K-5, these next 12 years will seem more like a series of marathons or a triple triathlon. Stay focused! And for all students between K-4 and 12th grade, the new school year brings new teachers, new friends and possibly even new schools. Ready or not, here comes another 180 days filled with lectures and laughter. It goes without saying that on the first day, the lip gloss will be “poppin” and all of the gear will be tight. But in the meantime, fill these remaining summer days with fun and games, laughter and playing and just plain old good times. Remember, at some point in the not so distant future, these will be your “good old days”. Be Young! Have Fun!
