COLUMBIA — Jason Haltiwanger had one more game to coach this spring after leading RWA to its first state title since 1989.

The head girls basketball coach was chosen as an assistant coach with the SCISA all stars for their March 9 game against the all stars from the Georgia Independent Schools Association.

The game featured the best seniors in each state. Though Haltiwanger said he had a fun time coaching the girls on the S.C. squad, the game turned out not to be as much fun for his bunch. The team from Georgia emerged with a 73-52 victory.

Noting that his state championship team had no seniors this season, Haltiwanger said that there was a lot of underclassmen talent in South Carolina that could not play in the game, which may have contributed to the wide margin of defeat.

He said the center for the Georgia squad rivaled recent RWA graduate Alex Maas in her ability and that the Georgia team had size and speed at the guard positions.

“The Georgia point guard was one of the fastest I’ve ever seen,” he said. “And we really struggled with their post players, several of whom likely are Division I college prospects.”

He was thankful to have had the kind of season that would earn him the honor of coaching in an All Star Game, though.

“This was a great opportunity and it reflects well of our school and program (that I chosen able to participate in it),” Haltiwanger said.
