JENKINSVILLE — In keeping with its custom the V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant made a public presentation of its tax payment to Fairfield County in January, a payment of a bill totaling $233,360,205.74. In the Jan. 18, 2013, edition of The Herald Independent, the article on that presentation contained an error in its account of the breakdown of the tax dollars. Ridgeway and Winnsboro do not receive allocated funds from the payment 2013 V.C. Summer made to the county.

Rather, the $15,712.16 for Winnsboro and the $4,579.22 for Ridgeway are funds that are used as rollbacks against property tax in those municipalities.

According to County Administrator Phil Hinely, a local one-penny sales tax option was put in place seven to eight years ago and that sales tax revenue was a rollback against property tax in Winnsboro and Ridgeway. There were no property taxes collected in Winnsboro and Ridgeway, because those funds were substituted with sales tax. The two figures actually are monetary relief to the nuclear plant on its property tax bill.

Hinely said clearly that neither Ridgeway, nor Winnsboro received those funds in their coffers.

In order for this County to have any chance of recovery the first step needs to be the termination of Hinley.
