RIDGEWAY — Theft can occur at any time, including crime of opportunity. The Fairfield County Sheriff’s office reminds residents to please secure their vehicles even when they are parked in a residents’ yards.

A string of Sept. 19 larcenies in Ridgeway along Wateree Estates Road drives home that point.

Captain Brad Douglas with the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office says that someone came into the area, apparently in the middle of the night. The person, or persons, checked for open doors on cars.

Jewelry, money, tools and a firearm were among the items stolen.

Douglas said deputies do not believe this crime of opportunity is related to any other criminal activity currently going on in the county.

There was no sign of forced entry on any of the vehicles from which items were stolen.

He reminds people to be proactive and try to make themselves less of a target for thieves.

“We encourage people to keep their doors locked to help their valuable remain secure,” Douglas said.
