CHARLESTON — Richard Winn’s varsity boys basketball team saw its season come to a close Friday night with a first round playoff loss to Palmetto Christian.
The Eagles gave their opponents all they could handle in the first quarter and trailed by only one point 18-19 as the quarter ended.
In the second quarter, a 22-6 spurt put the Eagles in a big hole a halftime down 41-24. A 7-0 Eagles run to start the third quarter cut into the lead but the Eagles never got within a 10 point defecit in the second half.
Poor free throw shooting in the second quarter by RWA helped Palmetto Christian open up its big lead. The Eagles hit only 1 of 7 free throws attempts in the second quarter. Two seniors scored in double figures for the Eagles, Reid Johnson with 18 points and Logan Gibbons with 15. The loss ends the Eagles’ season.
Coach Joe Pitt saw positives in how this group grew and increased its basketball I.Q. this season. A tougher bunch with a solid work ethic gives him reason for optimism heading into next season when he could return as many as nine of his 12 players from this squad, including talented guards Cameron Cooper and Patrick Pope.
