The Richard Winn Eagles played with a lot of heart Friday night but came up short against Patrick Henry Academy in an 18-15 loss.
Patriots senior fullback Paul Daniel DeLoach broke through the Eagle’s defense with seven seconds remaining for the winning touchdown.
The teams played to a 12-12 tie in the first half. Senior running back Sidney Edenfield scored two first half touchdowns for the Eagles.
Edenfield left with an aparent shoulder injury in the second quarter and did not return in the second half.
In his absence the Eagles hung tough on defense. The 12-12 score would hold up until late in the fourth quarter.
With 6:07 to go in the game, the Eagles stopped the Patriots on fourth down and then drove from their 47-yard line into the red zone.
The drive stalled inside the 20-yard line but the Eagles connected on a Mason Gibbons field goal, giving Richard Winn a 15-12 lead. His 20-yard kick came with 4:27 left in the game.
That drive featured several tough runs by Austin Knox and a broken field quarterback scramble that set up Gibbons’ kick.
The game also featured a big goal line stand by the Eagles in the second half. Patrick Henry took over for the final 2:07 and used a mixture of running plays to get inside the Eagles 5-yard line.
