Helen Washington never thought that the small banana tree that her son, Van Gaither, gave to her two years ago would even grow in this area, as she had never seen one before.

Nevertheless Washington planted the tree in her front yard and the first years did not see much growth.

As the seasons changed, she cut down the branches and covered it for the winter.

This year, to her surprise, the tree has been growing continuously and now stands over 14 feet tall.

Washington said, “I am amazed by the height and the fact that it now has bananas starting to grow on it.”

Not only is the tree growing, but around the base you can see new stem sprouting up.

Washington is awaiting the first harvest of bananas while enjoying the beauty it is bringing to her yard.

It seems that although referred to most commonly as a tree the plant is really a perennial herb.

These plants are able to grow so tall because of the stems which are tightly wrapped leaves.
