Tonight, the Fairfield Central Griffins look to take the sting out of the Union County Yellow Jackets.

This week the Griffins face the challenge of containing a passing attack with a few Division I caliber athletes pitching the ball around.

Senior quarterback for Union, Keiston Smith, has manned that signal calling position since he was a sophomore.

They have two Division I level wide receivers for him to throw to as well, according to Fairfield Central head coach Demetrius Davis.

The coach across the field from Davis is a name familiar to many fans.

Union should know its passing game X’s and O’s because it is coached by former University of South Carolina star quarterback Steve Tanneyhill.

Ball control and protecting the football will be key for the Griffins.

While they have a capable passing game, their quarterback lacks the polish and experience of his opponent, so look for FCHS to keep the ball on the ground, control the tempo and try to keep that potent Union offense off the field.

After a 18-7 win a week ago in which the Griffins protected the football and performed well against a bigger, stronger Chester club, Coach Davis feels his bunch will be ready for Union.

He believes his defense has a chance to keep those star players for Union in check.

Davis had no plans to modify schemes on defense heading into this week.

“We just go out and do what we do,” he said. “If are good up the middle and the kids know their assignments, you’ll be fine on defense.”

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
