National Night Out was held on Tuesday at the Old Armory in Winnsboro, from 6-8 p.m.
This event was sponsored by the Winnsboro Public Safety and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
The theme for this year was “It Takes a Community to Fight Crime.”
The event was free and provided entertainment and information for the entire family.
Officers maned booths that included bicycle safety, child fingerprinting, crime prevention, face painting, gang awareness, gun safety and code enforcement.
National Night Out is just that, a nationwide event that combines citizens and local law enforcement, who come together to educate and be educated on how to combat criminal activity.
This year’s turnout in Fairfield County was very low with about 30 people taking part in the event.
Law enforcement officers continued to man their tables and engaged those in attendance, but looking around the room at the low turnout, it raised a lot of questions.
With the increase in criminal activities and the high crime rates in the area, one would wonder why the community did not take the time to attend such an event.
The community is encouraged to take advantage of events like National Night Out, as this is a chance to ask questions, have one-on-one time with officers, become aware of programs that are offered and show strength in combating crime in the area.
This year’s theme said it all. “It Takes a Community to Fight Crime.”
In order to make sure that the community is safe, it takes a team effort from law enforcement and the community.
