WINNSBORO — Thanks to their solid transition game, the Lady Eagles continued to soar for Richard Winn Academy on Friday night, defeating the Spartanburg Day Griffins 52-26.
The conference win moves the Eagles to 16-0 on the season.
Jaycie Johnson led RWA with 12 points. Jessie Stidham added 11. Carson Justice and Emily Brigman each added 10 points in a balanced attack for the Eagles that saw seven players total break into the scoring column.
Mixing in a variety of traps, zones and pressure defenses, the Eagles held the Griffins below 30 points. They streaked out to a 17-5 lead and never looked back in this contest. The transition game was the key to the competition, as Coach Jason Haltiwanger predicted.
The girls got out on fast breaks and converted those opportunities to offset the methodical offense and defensive schemes of the Griffins.
Things did not go as well for the boys’ varsity team. At the end of the first period three-point shooting helped the Eagles cut the Griffin lead to 17-12. With 1:57 left in the first half, though the Griffins stretched their lead to 28-16. Despite Cameron Cooper’s 14 points to lead the Eagles, the Griffins pulled away with a 55-34 victory.
The Eagles now are 5-10 on the season with their next conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Richard Winn.
RWA hosts Spartanburg Christian Academy in SCISA AA Region III action on Jan. 8. The Spartanburg Christian girls’ squad won its last game over Greenwood Christian 52-37 to get a good start in conference play as well.
