To the Editor:

In regards to the Sept. 10 issue brought up at the county council meeting about Fairfield County’s Sheriff’s Department, I would like to add that my property has been entered three times in the past several weeks by metal thieves cruising the opened up lane of access created by the recent work on the SCE&G power line.

My daughter encountered one pickup loaded with stolen farm equipment and my brother ran another would-be attempt off from the subcontractors’ equipment on the line near his house.

I read the sheriff’s report in every issue of the Herald-Independent and note how many rural churches and businesses are being victimized.

The deputies told me that our county is so vastly uninhabited in many places and many dirt roads make it easy for them to hide out undetected.

It is difficult for the deputies to patrol so many locales because of this.

It is up to us as landowners to take every precaution for security and to report suspicious activity.

In my case, the subcontractors working on the power line have now constructed fences and gates along the access areas.

Pelham Lyles,

Winnsboro
