It’s official: Griffin Basketball is back in full swing and Griffin Nation couldn’t be more pleased as the season is under way.

The men’s varsity squad has jumped out to an early 2-0 start and traveled to Blythewood last Friday in hopes of continuing their winning ways.

The defending region champs have taken care of business in their first two outings knocking off the likes of Eau Claire Great Falls impressively.

“As the reigning region champs our goal is to make that next step and in order to do so we must take it one game at a time,” Griffins head coach Miguel Burns said. “Team ball and defense. We drive on our defense and that’s what we hope will carry us throughout this season.”

It was the defense that evidently carried the Griffins to their third win in as many games, cruising past Blythewood 62-36. Defensive turnover after turnover helped Fairfield jump out to an early 38-19 halftime advantage, outscoring the Bengals 23-7 in the second quarter. FC finished the half with 13 forced turnovers.

Both offenses got off to a sluggish start to start the second half with a total of 17 combined points scored in the third period. With FC holding a comfortable 47-27 lead heading into the fourth, the aforementioned Griffin ‘D’ stepped up huge allowing only nine points in the final eight minutes as the Griffins got their third win.

Led by senior guard Mikel Trapp, who finished with a game-high 19 points, FC shut down the Bengals on both ends of the floor.

“We’re on a mission right now,” Trapp said after the win. “We want to repeat as region champs and win a state championship. That is our main goal and I just want to help this team accomplish that.”

“Our guards have really stepped up and done what was asked of them so far. They aren’t selfish and seem to handle pressure well,” Burns added. “That’s what it takes to compete.”

With the win the Griffins improve to 3-0 and looks to wrap up their 4-game road trip Tuesday evening when they travel to take on the always competitive Keenan Raiders. They will make their home debut Friday as they welcome rival Great Falls to town. Both games scheduled for 6pm.

The Fairfield Central Athletics department is asking the community to come out and support the Griffins this season as they look to contend for the state crown.
