BLAIR — Service, education and inspiration were on tap Sunday as Blair native and Allen University President Dr. Pamela Wilson delivered the Black History segment of a program at Gethsemane Baptist Church.

In 2010 she became the first female to serve as president at Allen University. Prior to that posting, she also served her country as a six-year veteran of the South Carolina and Indiana Army National Guard and was assigned to the 114th Signal Communications Unit in Camden and the 438th Chemical Unit in Terre Haute, Ind.

A 1988 honor graduate of Fairfield Central High School, Wilson holds a bachelor of arts in English Communications from Voorhees College; a master of arts in English and American Literature from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Ind.; and a doctor of philosophy in English with an emphasis in rhetoric and composition and a concentration in business and administrative communication from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

A past recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from South Carolina’s Independent Colleges and Universities, she is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Association of Business Communication, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and the Modern Language Association. She also serves on the editorial review board of Readerly/Writerly Texts, a journal on literary, pedagogical, and composition theory.

As an experienced administrator and professor of English, she has served Allen University since 2006, holding positions as chair for the Division of Humanities and Social Science, associate vice president for Academic and Student Affairs, and executive vice president. Her speaking engagement at the church showed those present how her unique skill set and gifts and how she pursued her vocation and become the leader and educator that God called her to be.
