In June, Aaron Frish, the 11-year-old son of Peter M. Frish of Winnsboro and grandson of Harold and Pat Frish attended the Chicago area Salvation Army Metro Music Camp in Camp Lake, Wis.
Aaron’s great uncle, George Binder Jr., also an accomplished trumpet player, was on faculty at the camp this year.
A home schooled student in Winnsboro, Frish has been taking private trumpet lessons for the past three years from Jens Larsen at Newberry College.
This was his first experience playing in a band. The camp is sponsored by the Northern Illinois Salvation Army District and hosts around 250 young musicians each year. There are three choruses and seven bands.
Frish is the third generation trumpet player in his grandmothers’ family to attend this camp.
During the camp, the youth are divided according to age and playing ability.
The guest artist this year was Mark Ridenour, First Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and member of the Des Plaines, Ill. Salvation Army Corps.
The camp consisted of master classes with Mr. Ridenour, three hours of daily rehearsal, and music theory classes, as well as sectional rehearsals.
In between rehearsals, a typical camp day included swimming, rock climbing, archery, high ropes course and other activities.
Aaron was awarded scholarships to attend the camp next summer as well as an alternate scholarship to attend next year’s young people’s music camp in Boston, Mass. next year.
Aaron is shown in this picture holding the trophy he was awarded as the best musician in his band and he was awarded third place overall best camper.
