WINNSBORO — The Richard Winn Eagles baseball team lost a pitcher’s duel in Thursday night action against Spartanburg Day Academy.
In the 3-1 defeat Richard Winn out hit Spartanburg Day School 10-3 but had three errors and left a dozen men on base. The Eagles loaded the bases three times but each time Spartanburg Day pitchers did a phenomenal job with damage control and kept the Eagles from rallying.
Spartanburg Day played error-less baseball and it showed.
Leading hitters for Richard Winn were Elijah Tucker 3-3 with a walk and a double. Tucker scored a run. Other notables were Patrick Pope 1-4 with a steal; Corey Davis at 1-4; Austin Knox at 1-4; Matt Taylor at 1-4; Cameron Cooper at 1-3 with a walk; Jason Branham at 1-4; and Sidney Edenfield was 1-2 with a walk, a steal and an RBI.
Patrick Pope started the game, lasting five innings. He allowed one hit and one earned run. Pope walked four and struck out four. He also hit a batter. Cameron Cooper came on in relief of Pope who took the loss in this one. Cooper gave up two hits and yielded two earned runs. He walked one batter and struck out two.
Richard Winn returns to action on the baseball diamond April 4 against St. Mary’s High School from Maryland. That game will be played at Winthrop University in Rock Hill with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
