Residents of the Laurelwood Apartments turned out Thursday for an informative, entertaining health fair at the main office.
The health fair was free to all residents of Laurelwood.
It was a joint effort of Beverly Williams with Hospice Care of South Carolina and with the staff at Laurelwood including Shemeka Ford, site manager at Laurelwood Apartments.
The apartments serve senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
She said the attendance had been excellent among the 64 residents.
“We do events like this including a birthday social, a yard of the month, bingo and door prizes for all of our community,” Ford said.
Activities included bead art recreational therapy supplied by Hospice Care of South Carolina, medical screenings for blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol and blood sugar done by Fairfield County Memorial Hospital.
Other vendors included Best Choice Insurance, Aftercare Medical Equipment and Supplies, Liberty Mutual Insurance and attorney Debra A. Matthews who discussed wills and estate planning options.
“It was really eye opening to talk with the residents here,” Matthews said.
Lynn Hewitt, coordinator of outpatient care at the Fairfield County Memorial Hospital, said these events provide great community-medical interaction.
“We promote doing these types of preventative tests at churches and our community health fair day, which the hospital will hold on Oct. 24,” she said.
The ice cream, games and personal attention all went over smoothly.
Residents enjoyed the morning. Hospice provided a bead art station, a popular stop at the fair.
Williams said they also do woodworking with senior citizens at the council on aging on Mondays for one hour.
“I like to see my neighbors at these events for laughter and good times,” Laurelwood resident Aaron Roseboro said.
He said that so often the neighbors wind up going their separate ways to various doctors and that these events help unite the community.
