WINNSBORO — A 50-year-old Fairfield County man was arrested on charges of second-degree burglary and second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor (possession of child pornography) after his bicycle was identified on a surveillance video taken March 12 inside Fairfield Middle School.
Yahya Abdul Salaam, of Flora Circle, was arrested March 19 by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department on trespassing charges after deputies responded to a call at Home Movie Rental on Columbia Road. At that time, deputies took custody of his personal belongings, including a computer and bicycle.
During the early morning hours of March 12, an alarm was activated inside Fairfield Middle School. School resource officers reviewed surveillance video and observed an unknown male inside of the school who appeared to be naked from the waist down. Footage also showed the subject leaving the school on a purple and silver bicycle.
On March 20, FCSO investigators reviewed the Fairfield Middle School incident. Analysis of the videotape indicated that the bicycle in the videotape and the bicycle seized from Salaam were the same. Due to this investigative information, a search warrant was conducted on Salaam’s computer and computer accessories.
One of Salaam’s computer memory storage devices contained several pornographic images of young females, some of whom appeared to be younger than 10.
Additionally, Salaam gave a written statement that he was the individual on the school video.
He is currently being held at the Fairfield County Detention Center.
Sheriff Herman Young said he appreciated the critical role school resource officers played in the collaborative investigative effort between the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and the School District of Fairfield County.
