WINNSBORO — Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s new digital mammography machine incorporates advanced imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images.
Digital mammography is significantly better than firm screen mammography in screening women who are under age 50 or women of any age who have very dense breast tissue. In addition, studies show digital mammography uses less radiation than standard film mammography. Digital imaging generally takes less than a minute per film compared to 10 to 15 minutes for film mammography.
The use of mammography and in particular, digital mammography, has greatly enhanced the ability to detect breast cancer at an early stage, when it’s most treatable.
Digital mammography detected significantly more cancers than screen-film mammography in women 50 and younger, premenopausal and perimenopausal women, and women with dense breasts, according to results from the American College of Radiology Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST).
All patients imaged at Fairfield Memorial Hospital are taken electronically and immediately stored on a computer. The images are more detailed and sharper than film images.
