WINNSBORO — Memorial Day is right around the corner, and that means it is Poppy time again.
Ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 of Winnsboro will join other ALA units around the country in distributing memorial poppies again this year. Poppies have been traditionally worn to commemorate soldiers who have died in war.
They were first worn by the ALA from 1914-1918 to honor soldiers who had died in World War I. Current ALA Unit 16 member and past president (2010-2012) Carla Moore is excited about the upcoming Poppy distribution.
“This is such a fun and honored tradition in Winnsboro,” Moore said.
Donations that are collected from the project will be used strictly for veteran’s services. Be on the look out for the ALA Unit 16 Ladies in the Winnsboro community on Thursday (May 23) through Memorial Day (May 27).
They will be distributing the Poppies and accepting donations in front of the post office and downtown Winnsboro storefronts along Congress Street. Last year ALA’s Unit 16 raised more than $1,000 for veterans with their poppy efforts and Unit 16’s Poppy Chair, Paulette Lewis, looks forward to another successful year.
“Our unit has great success due to the generosity of Winnsboro residents,” Lewis said. “We are so grateful and looking forward to this year’s program.”
