WINNSBORO — Several teens have the chance to become state champions Saturday when they represent Fairfield Central High School at the AA Track and Field Upper State Championship at Lower Richland High School.

The FCHS girls team finished sixth overall at Upper State Championship.

They were led by Aliyah Miller, the upper state champion in the 100 meter and a runner up in the 200-meter, and by Jada Martin, who placed third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Foster and Martin also were on the second place 4 x 100 meter relay team along with Shytaneece Woodard and Chelsea Seibles.

Devonta’ Foster placed second in the 100-meter for the boys and will run in that event Saturday. He also ran anchor leg for the 4 x 100 meter relay. The other relay members looking to put a state champion medal around their necks Saturday are Larry Bell, Joseph Young and Shadarious Hopkins.

Coach Cedrick Simpson was thrilled with his student-athletes.

“Aliyah and Jada were track superstars (at the meet),” he said.

He said the girls relay team from Dillon will be a big challenge for them, because those girls ran well last year and did really well in their lower state meet. Simpson sees the boy relay competition shaping up between Calhoun County, Woodlands and Fairfield Central.

The boys 4 x 100 team for FCHS ran a 43:21, a solid showing to qualify them for the state meet. Their coach believes they ran the kind of race they can build upon and excel Saturday.
