WINNSBORO — The Richard Winn Eagles baseball team won a pair of games last week, defeating the Newberry Academy Eagles handily in five innings and then using some ninth inning drama to get past Spartanburg Christian.

Newberry Academy Game

In the 14-8 win over Newberry Academy, the Eagles had 14 hits and only left five men on base.

Leading hitters were Patrick Pope, 3-4 with two runs scored, a grand slam home run and four RBI; Corey Davis, 2-3 with three runs scored, one steal, one RBI and one hit by pitch; Austin Knox, 2-4 with one RBI; Elijah Tucker, 3-4 with a home run, four RBI, one steal and he scored a run; Sidney Edenfield, 2-4 with a steal and two runs scored; Jason Branham, 1-2 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI; and Zach Owens was 1-1 with an RBI, one steal and he scored a run.

Sidney Edenfield earned the win pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up five runs, three of which were earned. He allowed three hits and walked four while striking out three.

Elijah Tucker pitched 2/3 of an inning, inducing a double play from the only batter he faced. Cameron Cooper closed things out in the final frame, allowing three runs, two earned and giving up two hits and one walk.

Greenwood Christian Game

Richard Winn kept the game close with Greenwood Christian thanks to a solid relief outing by Jason Branham. Branham came on in relief of starter Austin Knox who went four innings and gave up eight runs, four of which were earned.

He allowed nine hits, walked one, hit two batters and struck out three. Branham did not allow an earned run and only gave up three hits while striking out three. He had good command and walked none.

The Eagles batted in the top of the ninth with the score tied. Cameron Cooper led off the inning with a walk. A bunt single followed putting runners on first and second with no outs. The Greenwood Christian pitcher walked Branham and then settled in to face John Coleman.

Coleman drew a walk for the go ahead run to score. The next batter hit into an inning ending double play but one run turned out to be enough thanks to Branham.

Coming off these two wins, RWA plays Spartanburg Christian Tuesday and needs to win to keep its playoff hopes alive.
