Adult education program on the rise in Fairfield County
by Kevin Boozer
Staff writer

The adult education program at Gordon Odyssey Academy is growing according to director of alternative learning programs Dr. Nathaniel Bryan.

Last year 40 students earned GEDs or diplomas via the program, a significant achievement in South Carolina which is one of the top ten states nationally for students completing their GED.

There are two adult education options, a morning program that meets from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or Tuesday/Thursday evening classes at the Midlands Tech Quick Jobs Center which meet from 4p.m.-8p.m.

This year Midlands Technical College facilities will be used for Monday evening academic intervention programming providing tutoring to high school and GED students.

Adult education students also will have a 30 minute lunch period for the first time.

Bryan is excited about the social interaction and the chance for camaraderie that can result from the lunch periods.

It also gives the students an environment to work on soft skills that will help them socially in job interviews and in the work force.

The adult ed students this year will have access to Work Keys online program. In previous years they had access to Work Keys testing, but the online programming enables them to receive remediation followed by the actual online exam they would need to take to earn the Work Keys certification.

Students can continue take that Work Keys test free of charge thanks to the school district’s support.

It is hoped that many will chose to do so, and in so doing help establish themselves as desirable employees for manufacturing jobs and other positions leading to full time employment.
