WINNSBORO — Area residents and visitors from as far away as Atlanta and New Jersey came to the Fairfield County Airport and the S.C. Railroad Museum as part of the county’s Wings and Wheels festival on Saturday.
Festival goers had the chance to fly in a helicopter by the JAARS missionary mission and they observed a close quarters landing on the runway by a JAARS plane, like the missionary group does when they deliver supplies and medical care to remote jungle locations around the world. JAARS members were on hand to explain their volunteer mission.
JAARS provides resources in support of Bible translation around the world, including air, land and sea transportation. Communication and computer support also is provided. The training center is headquartered in Waxaw, N.C. so they often attend events like Wings and Wheels to promote the ministry.
We provide a service that saves wear and tear of missionaries, saves time and provides medical services to the local population, said Mike Mower, a 20-year missionary pilot in the Philippines who now works in the United States doing public relations for JAARS.
Judy and Peter Clark from Elgin flew for the first time at the Wings and Wheels, courtesy of the JAARS group. Judy said she had a little fear of heights but that her husband put her up to it. They flew together and enjoyed the view of trees and rock quarries.
She was surprised that the helicopter was moving about 130 mph but that she felt as if she were sitting still while riding. They were thankful to have made the trip to the area and planned to come visit again in the future.
