WINNSBORO — Richard Winn Academy’s season was extended by a few days last weekend when they learned Friday they made the playoffs. Rainy weather meant that their doubleheader at Calhoun Academy was moved from Monday to this afternoon.
First pitch is at 4 p.m. If the Eagles win at least one of those games then they would have a rematch against Calhoun Academy with the rubber match being hosted by RWA.
“We played through Wednesday of last week. We needed some rest and got it, so hopefully our pitcher’s arms are a little stronger,” Coach Al Berry said.
Berry said that Calhoun Academy is an older bunch and a good defensive team.
“They play in a tough conference and do well, so we’ll have our hands full,” he said.
Berry said his team became more solid as the season progressed.
“Guys are not beating themselves so much,” he said. “There are less walks and less hit batters and our pitchers are throwing a lot more strikes. This one should come down to who plays the best defense and which team has the best pitching.”
Berry said Patrick Pope will take the mound for the Eagles in the first game and they would see how things went from there. He said his senior outfielders have been solid all year and that his upperclassmen infielders are holding their own as well.
Berry expects a fun atmosphere and a real challenge to try and defeat Calhoun Academy twice in two days, but he believes his Eagles will rise to the occasion.
