WINNSBORO — The Richard Winn Academy Eagles baseball team’s postseason chances were put on life support Wednesday night as they dropped a second game in a row. The 4-1 loss to Providence Athletic Club came on the heels of a 6-2 defeat by Spartanburg Christian Academy.

Patrick Pope pitched 6 2/3 innings against Spartanburg Christian, giving up six earned runs on eight hits. He walked one, hit one batter and had eight strikeouts for the Eagles. Austin Knox came on to record the final out of the game.

The Eagles managed just seven hits and left nine runners on base. Leading hitters were Patrick Pope, 1-4; Corey Davis, 1-4; Austin Knox, 2-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and a run scored; Elijah Tucker, 1-3 with a double, a steal and a walk; Jason Branham, 1-4; and Reid Johnson, 1-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.

In the Providence Athletic Club contest, the Eagles lone run was driven in by junior Austin Knox. He finished 1-2 and was hit by a pitch.

That run was not enough for starter Cameron Cooper who picked up the loss after yielding four runs, one of which was earned, in 3 1/3 innings of work. He allowed seven hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out two.

Jason Branham came on and pitched shut out relief but even with a good arm on the mound late, the Eagles were unable to mount a comeback. Branham allowed three hits, hit one batter and struck out one.

Leading RWA hitters were Patrick Pope, 1-3 with a run scored and a stolen base; Corey Davis, 1-3; Sidney Edenfield, 2-2 with a walk; Jason Branham, 2-2 with a steal and Doug Paulie, who was hit by a pitch.

The two game losing skid likely ends the Eagles’ season, though they will find out officially about state playoff brackets today.
