RIDGEWAY — For three years now residents in Ridgeway have donned their hats and had an Easter promenade. On Saturday, people of all ages took to Palmer Street and strolled through town singing songs and showing off their Easter best.
This year Judy Miller, owner and operator of Just Around the Corner in Ridgeway was one of the grand marshals. She decorated a recent birthday gift — a three-wheeled bike — and rode it at the lead of the parade. The other grand marshal was Phyllis Nichols Gutierrez. The promenade was a brainchild of hers and, according to attendees, the event gets bigger every year.
The Rev. David L. Watters from Church Street pulled out his red and white striped coat and matching hat and joined the group in their fun. He was one of the few men in the promenade, although it is open to anyone who has a hat and is willing to stroll and sing.
An Easter egg hunt followed the parade with young children hunting eggs in Mayor Charlene Herring’s yard. Organizers said they hid 2,000 eggs for the event. Each egg had a slip of paper inside. The paper was redeemable at area merchants so that children could visit them and receive candy and Easter treats once the hunt concluded.
Children and adults also enjoyed horse drawn carriage rides down Palmer Street in keeping with the pageantry in the community that has so much horse country nearby.
