On March 30, Fairfield Central High School provided an academic retreat for its students using a single-gender education format to narrow the educational attainment gap between the two genders. The male students occupied the third floor and the gymnasium while the female students took residence on the second floor and the auditorium. The spring retreats were follow-ups from earlier retreats that took place in the fall. The female students participated in “We Rock” Part Two, a program designed to prepare female students for challenging academic work, build character and good citizenship. The male students retreat was composed of break-out sessions with similar goals and objectives.
“We Rock” Part Two was presented using a talk show format in which the female students participated in an open forum. The speakers included Fairfield Central staff; Ms. Andrea Harrison, Fairfield County School Board Chairwoman; Ms. Marne Robinson, founder of “We Rock;” and Ms. Cynthia Hardy, radio talk show host.
After the retreats, the female and male students must put into practice the lessons for the next seven weeks. The effectiveness of both retreats as an educational intervention is being evaluated by the Fairfield Central High School Curriculum and Instruction Department.
