WINNSBORO — The RWA Eagles baseball team has gone 2-1 in its last three contests, picking up a 14-9 victory over Newberry Academy Wednesday night.
The Eagles defeated Heathwood Hall 11-5. RWA overcame five errors in the contest and managed to generate a lot of offense despite leaving seven men on base. Junior Jason Branham pitched five innings for the Eagles, giving up four runs, none of which were earned.
He walked three, struck out two and gave up just one hit. Elijah Tucker came on in relief and pitched the final two frames. Tucker gave up one unearned run on one hit with two walks, two hit batters and he struck out four.
Hitters included Patrick Pope, who went 3-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run. Corey Davis went 1-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI; Cameron Cooper went 1-4 with one steal and one RBI; Elijah Tucker was 1-4 with a run scored and one RBI; and Sidney Edenfield was 2-4 with two runs scored, a stolen base and two RBI.
Matt Taylor went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored; Jason Branham was 1-3 with a run scored, one RBI and a walk; Hampton Caughman was 1-3 and one hit by a pitch; and Reid Johnson was 1-2 with a run scored, a steal, a walk, an RBI and one being hit by a pitch.
The game versus Spartanburg Day was a 7-6 defeat for RWA. The Eagles gave up six runs on 10 hits, committed three errors and left six men on base.
Patrick Pope pitched a complete game in the loss. Pope gave up seven runs, two of which were earned. He allowed nine hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Leading hitters were Patrick Pope, who was 2-4 with two runs scored, one steal and one double; Corey Davis, who was 2-4 with one run scored, an RBI and a steal; and Austin Knox, who was 1-3 with a walk and one RBI.
Cameron Cooper went 1-4 with a run scored; Matt Taylor was 3-4 with a double and a run scored; Sidney Edenfield was 1-3 with a steal and one RBI; and Reid Johnson was 0-2 with a sacrifice safety squeeze for an RBI.
The Eagles led 6-4 heading into the final inning of play. The first Spartanburg Day batter was wrung up by Pope on a strikeout. The next batter reached on an error but Pope followed that up by striking out the next batter.
With two outs, Spartanburg Day worked some magic. They got back-to-back singles off Pope to load the bases. The next batter doubled to drive in three runs and provide the winning margin.
