WINNSBORO — The Fairfield Central Griffins baseball team avenged an early season loss to Richard Winn Academy, defeating the Eagles 7-3 on Thursday night.

The Griffins had an early 2-0 lead but a series of fielding blunders helped the Eagles explode to a 3-2 advantage. A misplayed ball in left a wild pitch kept the Eagles alive in the inning until clutch hitting drove the runners in.

The Griffins regrouped around their head coach and flushed the mental mistakes and errors. Instead they bounced back at the plate and by the fifth inning they led 5-3.

The runs and errors ran Christopher Boyd’s pitch count up early in the contest. The junior struck out five but had four walks, a balk and hit a batter.

Junior Compton Walker came into the game and iced the deal, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking just two batters of the 14 he faced.

Walker picked up the win after pitching three strong innings of relief. Losing pitcher was Patrick Pope for Richard Winn.

Leading hitters for the Griffins were Compton Walker who went 2 - 4 with a home run. He added a single and two RBI. Walker also stole three bases and scored three runs.

Stanley McManus played catcher in this game and he followed up a recent no hitter by getting a lot of hits in this one. McManus was a perfect 3 - 3 at the plate with a triple, double and a single. He also drove in four runs.

TaQuan Kelly and Chris Raley also had doubles for FCHS.

With the win the Griffins improve to 3-2 over all and 2-0 in their region.

The Eagles did all of their damage in the fourth with Patrick Pope leading off with a single and then stealing a base. Sidney Edenfield walking and stealing a base. He came around to score later that inning as did Matt Taylor whose single drove in Edenfield. Later in the inning Reid Johnson hustled home on a wild pitch to close out the scoring for Richard Winn.
