RIDGEWAY — Ridgeway residents turned out Saturday afternoon at Aimwell Presbyterian Church to bid farewell and Godspeed to long-time public servant Roy Hudson.
Hudson died April 11 at the age of 94.
Hudson was a recipient of The Order of the Silver Crescent, an inductee into the S.C. Firefighters Hall of Fame, was fire chief of Ridgeway, interim police chief of Ridgeway, First Citizen of the Year for Ridgeway (2007) and a volunteer fireman with over 70 years of service.
Firefighters in Ridgeway had a slogan of “Beat Mr. Roy” as each tried to beat him to the fire call but no one ever did.
“He will long be remembered as a patriarch and servant to the Town of Ridgeway,” said Mayor Charlene Herring. “This was a wonderful tribute for a man who meant so much to Ridgeway and Fairfield County.”
The American Flag was draped over Main Street in Ridgeway by the Fairfield County Fire Department in honor and memory of his service as a fireman and his love of Ridgeway.
