Fairfield Elementary School students have completed their mosaic tiles with Artist in Residence, Val Zaba. “The mosaic created for the school depicts a beautiful underwater scene to showcase our mascot, the Pirate. We decided to create a sea turtle mosaic and to adopt two sea turtles, which allowed students to track their whereabouts through www.cccturtles.org. This is a great service learning project while connecting to our S.C. standards for third grade, as well as art projects. It is a great opportunity to connect real life learning to meaningful content. It makes the learning relevant and fun for our students,” said Dr. Tammy Martin, FES Principal. The mosaic will be posted in the school’s lobby along with the pictures of the adopted sea turtles and letter from the conservancy. This project was made possible by a grant from the S.C. Arts Commission and the State Department of Education.
