The Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce hosted a workshop on Tuesday to teach local merchants how to promote and expand their businesses via online social media.

The workshop was conducted by ECI — a non-profit organization which targets market research and industry-specific solutions. ECI is headquartered in the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business in Columbia, with graduate students working on research development and journalism students working on marketing.

The majority of those in attendance at Tuesday’s workshop had little social media experience. Some were familiar with Facebook, but that was about the extent.

ECI Director of Business Development Mary Sparrow said she considered herself a social media dinosaur, too, and that she is luck to work with students who can keep her up to speed.

Those in attendance were taught the differences between Facebook and Twitter, such as Facebook allowing for more content and Twitter providing less on-screen clutter.

Workshop participants were also informed about social media avenues which are targeted to a more specific audience, such as Pinterest. Pinterest is geared toward 18-40-year-old upper-middle class women. One gentleman in attendance said his wife planned their entire wedding using Pinterest.

Look for more information about activities to be hosted by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce in upcoming editions of The Herald Independent.
