BLAIR — Morning drizzle did little to dampen the enthusiasm of members of the Blair community as they turned out strong to support the annual Blair Coalition of Churches family day and parade.

From the floats and candy to the barbecue and soul food, there was something for everyone in attendance including ice cream compliments of County Councilman Mikel Trapp.

Event organizer John Peoples estimated 1,800 people attended this year, down from last year’s numbers due to a rainy forecast. Visitors from as far away as Atlanta, Florida and Virginia attended the event. Residents gathered in prayer for the late Norma Jean Walton and her family just after the parade ended.

A long time worker at Fairfield Central High School and a fixture in the community, Peoples felt it appropriate to honor her on that day. The seven churches in the coalition had tents where they fed participants for free. Several families set up their own tents and had family reunions as well.

This event has grown in popularity and become a fixture for the Blair Community.

The school board, local law enforcement, EMS, the Fairfield Central High School band and area churches were a few of the people represented in the parade.

The coalition includes St. Matthews No. 2, Gethsemane Baptist, Weeping Mary Baptist of Blair, Hassion Hill Baptist Church, Old Hope Station Baptist Church, Little River Presbyterian Church and Zion Hopewell Baptist Church.

The organization enjoys fellowship as well as joint worship services.
