A Winnsboro man was arrested April 12 after a 24-year-old woman told police she woke up in her Deerwood Apartments home to find the suspect having sex with her.
The Winnsboro Department of Public Safety arrested 34-year-old Tavares Singleton and charged him with third-degree criminal sexual conduct in the incident, which occurred late in the night of April 11. Singleton was transported to the Fairfield County Detention Center and was later released on bond.
Freddie Lorick, Chief of Public Safety, said the victim claims Singleton was at her home with another person and all three were drinking. Later that night, the victim said she went to bed. She told police she awoke a short time later to find Singleton in bed with her and committing an unwanted sex act against her.
Lorick said the victim pushed Singleton away from her and called police.
Lorick also said Singleton did not deny having sex with the victim, but that he claims the act was consensual.
