South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities (SCGSAH) Creative Writing juniors were recognized in the 2012 Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest.
One of those getting the recognition was a local student.
Now in its 48th year, the national contest is sponsored by Hollins University and awards prizes for the best poems submitted by girls who are sophomores or juniors in high school or preparatory school. This year, the contest received 1,100 submissions and recognized 79 poems. Nine SCGSAH students were recognized in this group.
Nancy Thorp, Hollins class of 1960, was a young poet who showed great promise when she was a student. Following her death in 1962, her family established the Nancy Thorp Contest to encourage the work of young poets.

Allison Cooke, finalist from Richard Winn Academy in Winnsboro;
Julia Hogan, runner-up/honorable mention from Greenville High Academy;
Nandita Karambelkar, finalist from Stratford High School iin Goose Creek;
Lois Carlisle, finalist/honorable mention from Brashier Middle College Charter School in Simpsonville;
Laura Rashley, honorable mention from Lugoff-Elgin High School ;
Tiffany Farr honorable Mention from Irmo High School in Columbia;
Kaitlyn Alford, honorable mention from Rock Hill High School;
Soo-Jin Sung, honorable mention from Irmo High School in Columbia;
Deirdre Dishman, honorable mention from Wade Hampton High School in Greenville;
